Obama Seems to Forget Quickly

It has apparently been lost on President Obama that Nevada may have gone blue for him, but it is not consistently a blue state.  Perhaps he forgot that fact right before he tried to trash the state’s tourism industry.

Sin City’s mayor wants President Barack Obama to apologize for saying companies shouldn’t visit Las Vegas on the taxpayer’s dime.

Oscar Goodman spoke after a regular scheduled meeting with tourism officials where he expressed concern that federal lawmakers might be discouraging travel to the city.

Don’t say that offhand remarks can’t have consequences:

Late Monday, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said it had moved a three-day conference from the Las Vegas Strip to San Francisco amid what the bank called a broad review of its activities. Goldman Sachs has accepted $10 billion in federal bailout funds.

Vegas is one of the cheapest cities that companies could travel to when they need to cut event costs.  Instead, now choosing meeting cities is a matter of politics instead of smart money management.  (Consider where Goldman Sachs moved their meeting to after the remarks.)

AK-47 SKS Swap on Craigslist Causing a Stir

Curt has an interesting story from Philadelphia about someone proposing an AK-47 SKS swap on Craigslist.  I agree with Curt this is likely someone seeking attention, and quite possibly an anti-gunner looking to raise an issue in the media.  Whoever is proposing it, pretty clearly knows little or nothing of guns, and nearly nothing about their value.  That makes me skeptical it’s a gun enthusiast, and a gang member wouldn’t be using craigslist.

But I have to wonder about the mentality of city officials here, especially given that the paper incorrectly suggests that the transaction requires use of an FFL (true for handguns in Pennsylvania, but not for long guns).  One has to wonder if people can legally buy and transfer guns, even if an FFL is required, what’s the outrage about trading a gun for rims?  Or does such a transaction make allusions to certain demographics that people don’t want buying guns?

Tax Dollars at Work

Looks like SEPTA designed a pass for Philadelphia’s Beer Week that featured a nice skyline.  The only problem?  The skyline was New York City.  I’ll remember that as I’m driving to work on the turnpike every day with my tolls paying for this crap.  I guess if you get drunk enough at beer week, the skyline might start to look like Philly’s.

3 Plinkers Charged in New Jersey

I am not going to defend these three gentlemen’s judgment, because if you look at the satellite photo, you will notice they were not exactly shooting in a deserted area.  In Pennsylvania, this would justifiably get you a few misdemeanor charges, from violating a municipal discharge ordinance, disorderly conduct, and maybe if the prosecutor has a real beef with the circumstances, reckless endangerment.

But they are being charged with weapons offenses in New Jersey, particularly unlawful possession of a handgun.  This can be as simple as the kid taking his father’s pistol out to the woods in New Jersey.  It can even be as simple as the owner handing it off to a friend to shoot.  These are felonies, and they will be treated no different than gang members, rapists, or murderers by New Jersey’s criminal justice system, and from this point forward, their young lives will be completely ruined.  With felony records, they will be ineligible for many jobs, will be unable to serve in the military, and have almost no chance of getting their records cleared.  Most definitely they will never legally own a firearm.

I do think shooting a firearm off in a populated area like Cinnaminson shows a severe lack of judgement, and it is rightful for society to criminalize such errors of judgement, but the punishment does not fit the crime here.  This is, at best, a misdemeanor.  This is “reasonable” gun control the Philadelphia media says we should adopt on this side of the river.  No thanks.

Back Challengers Early

This site argues that the time to start backing challengers in the 2010 election is now:

Early funding also has a snowball effect — since people usually don’t want to throw their money away, they’ll generally only support a candidate who seems to have a chance to win. Before insurgent candidates can get much outside attention, they have to hit a threshold of support that indicates that they’re a serious contender. They have to have enough of SOMETHING — money, polling numbers or on-the-ground organization — to convince outsiders to get involved. And without resources and expertise available early, many candidates who might actually have a shot if given a chance never quite hit the mark. A handful of paid staff, or even just ONE paid staffer, can create the relationships and the organization that a campaign needs to prove viability, while also getting the structure in place to actually take real advantage of any money that floods in at the last minute.

I agree with this completely.  Read the whole thing.  Unfortunately, I don’t get the impression the GOP in my district is floating a challenger to Murphy yet.  Hopefully they won’t wait until it’s too late.

No Knock, Dead Dog

I don’t honestly know why more people aren’t outraged by this stuff.  I think a good part of it is that the media doesn’t really act like they care.  You don’t have anyone out there building elite opinion against no-knock raids, because they happen to other people.

I’m glad to see Obama taking some steps in regards to civil liberties, if he wants to help out his fellow Americans, particularly African-Americans, who I’m going to bet are disproportionately the victims of these police state tactics, he can raise some awareness for us.

Bad News

Justice Ginsburg apparently has pancreatic cancer.  Five year survival rate for this is very low.  She’s undergone surgery, most likely a whipple procedure, which is a major surgery with a high likelihood of complications.  On a personal note, we hope Justice Ginsburg recovers from her surgery and her cancer.  It was caught early, so her odds are better than most.

But from a political point of view, this means that Obama likely gets a Supreme Court pick for the 111th Congress.  If we’re going to have a knock-down drag-out confirmation fight, her replacement is the place to do it.  Can we make a Second Amendment litmus test?

Other Sovereignty Bills

There are other states that have been considering telling the feds to back off, much like New Hampshire, which we talked about a few days ago.

There may be others out there too.  I think these are healthy for federalism, but for now they are mostly gestures.  The problem with doing this for real would be the fact that many states suckle at the federal teat.  As long as that’s the case, I don’t see any states actually giving the feds the middle finger.

UN Human Rights Declaration

Ilya Somin has a great citicism of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights over at Volokh.  From my point of view, one of it’s major deficiencies is a lack of recognition of a natural right of self-defense, and the legal right to aquire, possess, and train with the means to defend yourself.  But I suppose that could end up being “exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.”  You know, like these purposes.  Can’t have that.
