LEO Cover for Anti-Gun Groups in Minnesota

The retiring police chief in Minneapolis is going to lend his name to the anti-gun cause. Every once in a while you get a true believer among police brass, and I guess this guy is one. Joan Peterson must adore him.

“I think, basically, he will be a resource on gun policy … and give feedback on legislation,” Martens said. “He has always been a voice for preventing gun violence.”

He’ll likely be someone they trot in front of the legislature or TV cameras every time they need an authentic law enforcement voice to tell the public how bad whatever bill X or Y that expands Second Amendment liberties is. Let’s just hope we can keep Tim Dolan very busy with that line of work.

Bloomberg’s Price – $257,000

Candidates who cozy up to Mike Bloomberg get a cool quarter million dollars plus in free advertising based on what he’s doing for the anti-gun Attorney General candidate here in Pennsylvania.

A super PAC founded and funded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is spending over $250,000 to boost Democratic Attorney General hopeful Kathleen Kane. …

The ad is airing on cable and broadcast in the Philadelphia market to the tune of $257,000, according to a buy tracked by the Sunlight Foundation’s political ad sleuth.

This race is a problem for Pennsylvania gun owners. Polls show Kane holding a huge lead, but they often have a high margin of error and still show about 1/3 of voters haven’t made up their minds, even this late in the game. The race is still winnable, but gun owners need to help out.

I’m not just talking about knocking on doors or making phone calls. With so many voters not paying any attention to the race, one of the best and easiest things to do would be to talk to any friends and family members and just let them know your choice. You don’t have to get into the gun issue, just make remarks that Freed is your candidate of choice based on his record as a prosecutor and encourage them to join you.

Kane has already promised CeaseFire that she’s going to work on undoing the concealed carry reciprocity agreements with all other states – not just Florida that has been demonized by the media.

Kane received a perfect score on CeaseFirePA’s questionnaire. In particular Kane has committed toa review of all concealed carry reciprocity agreements currently in place between Pennsylvania and other states, including Florida, and renegotiating or terminating those that do not meet Pennsylvania’s standards.

To give you an idea of how extreme you have to be to get a perfect score on CeaseFire’s questionnaire, not even an NRA D-rated Democratic Senator from Philadelphia could get more than an 85% agreement with them in 2010 when he was running for Governor. That’s how anti-gun you have to be – a solid F with gun owners and more extreme than even entrenched urban Democratic politicians.

MAIG Digging in my Old Backyard

Various MAIG mayors are pushing Lost and Stolen in the Delaware County Daily Times. These mayors should be forced to own up to MAIG’s radical positions on issues like concealed carry:

Ambler Mayor Bud Wahl, Hatboro Mayor Norm Hawkes, Jenkintown Mayor Ed Foley, Pottstown Mayor Bonnie Heath, Souderton Mayor John Reynolds and Telford Mayor Jay Stover are members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

If you live in these towns, work to get these mayors out. Exploiting a tragedy to push an unrelated agenda items is above the pale. If “Lost and Stolen” were really effective against criminals, how come there have been zero prosecutions from the towns that claimed this was a necessary ordinance to pass? It’s a useless law, who’s only result is going to be the punishing of people who were legitimately victims of crime. It is not “common sense” legislation. It is useless legislation, as been demonstrated by the lack of effectiveness it’s shown at the local level.

Upsetting the CSGV

They don’t like people who compare some fundamental rights to other fundamental rights. Voting is different, you see. There’s no consistency problem there. Nope. None. The Bill of Rights is a buffet to these people. They can take what they like, and leave what they don’t. I particularly love the comments:

“Sebastian and people like him are a HUGE part of the problem in gun sales laws. I hope someone forwards this conversation to the proper authorities.”

That’s defending liberty right there!

“Joan A. Peterson: Sebastian doesn’t have any idea what he is talking about. They make things up.”

No, I think you have me confused with yourself.

“Furthermore if you are as stupid as Sebastian you should not be able to sell guns period.”

Well now, I guess they aren’t prohibitionists after all.

Bloomberg Backing King in Maine Senate Race

He’s, of course, expecting Angus King to vote his way, which means against National Reciprocity. But of course, I’m sure he’ll be talking to the hilt about how he supports the Second Amendment and your hunting heritage. These people can’t win without lying.

Domestic Murders

Apparently CSGV doesn’t care about an uncomfortably large number of domestic murders.  You’ll often hear from the other side that their cause is reducing gun violence, and not other forms of violence. I get that people can pick their cause, and I don’t really think there’s anything wrong with that. But I also tend to think, translating this into another context, it would be like an organization dedicated to reducing drunk driving fatalities by trying to regulate Fords, and not concerning itself with regulating Hondas, Toyotas, or Chryslers. Sure, it’s legit, but it’s odd, and it would make me question whether the organization in question was really just out to get Ford.

Where is the Debate? It’s Here.

The Fordham University newspaper is very concerned about the crushing of debate by the evil NRA:

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is determined to squash public discourse on the issue of gun control. The NRA opposes even reasonable measures to curb the explosion of gun violence in America. There is no reason, as far as we can tell, that any citizen should need an AK-47. With atrocities such as the massacre in Aurora, Colo. (which involved the use of an assault weapon), the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin and the shooting of U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, we need to reevaluate the basis for easy accessibility of assault weapons.

No, we had a debate, and your side lost. This might be a shock to college students in New York City, but the rest of the country is nothing like New York City. There is also no crushing of debate. Debate would actually make gun blogging interesting again. But when we start to debate, our opponents immediately descend into insults, ad hominem and penis jokes. That’s the “your side losing” part. If you want a serious intellectual discussion of the topic, we’re happy to have one. But first you better be prepared, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from folks on the other side of this issue, is preparedness for serious debate is not their strong suit.

How to be Paranoid and Afraid on Halloween

Joan Peterson, Brady Board member extraordonaire, meets Hickok45, and hilarity ensues. These people would have made fantastic Puritans, wouldn’t they? Remember not to be so afraid and paranoid, and to ask parents whether there’s a gun in the home when you take the kids trick or treating. Also, don’t carve pumpkins with guns! Heavens no!

UPDATE: Joe Huffman seems to agree with Joan Peterson that carving pumpkins with guns isn’t necessarily the best way to celebrate Halloween.

It Doesn’t Matter What You Think, It Matters What They Think

From the Brady Center event, I think it’s worthwhile to point out a question asked by the Center to Justice Stevens on the subject of those horribly, wrongly-informed American people who believe they have rights even though the Brady lawyers know better:

I don’t care how long I’ve been working the activism side for this issue, it will never cease to amaze me the sheer number of gun owners who believe that just because they – and likely all of their friends and family – believe something to be a right, it’s protected by the legal system. That’s simply not true. When it comes to keeping gun ownership legal, it really doesn’t matter what the founding documents actually say. All that ultimately matters is how the government interprets it and enforces any laws they pass on the issue of gun ownership.

It kind of reminds me of a story I was told by a Massachusetts gun owner who was talking to a Pennsylvania gun owner at the NRA convention in Pittsburgh back in 2004. After hearing about the variety of gun laws there and the licensing nightmare that determines what kinds of guns you’re allowed to own and how you can use them, the Pennsylvania guy just responded with, “But this is America!” Yeah, buddy, it is America. Welcome. I just hoped he started paying more attention to the issue after hearing those stories.

Where Would Gun Control Be …

… if it wasn’t for rich assholes?

New York City’s billionaire mayor said Wednesday he will fund a super PAC to help candidates who favor gun control in local, state and federal elections nationwide. A person familiar with the plans put the commitment at $10 million to $15 million.

That’s pocket change for Bloomberg. But the guy didn’t make his money by being a moron. He may be a tyrannical nanny-stater, but he’s sharp, and that’s what makes him the biggest threat to our rights out there.
