NFA SBR Process

Looks like Uncle is going through it. I’ve been thinking about it myself. It really irks me that my AR carbine won’t accept a standard M7 bayonet. The reason is because the extra inch and a half on the barrel. One solution would be to put an M4 upper on it, but that makes it an SBR. I have a few questions if anyone can answer them.

  1. If I put the old upper back on, does it cease to be NFA at that point? Or just being in the NFRTR makes it an SBR no matter what upper you put on it?
  2. Are there issues moving SBRs between states? Do I have to fill out 5320.20 to move it interstate? Or does that only apply to machineguns?

Through curious definition in Pennsylvania law, I can’t carry a loaded rifle in a car. It’s only a summary offense to do so, but it’s a $300 fine. Loaded in this case means ammo not in a separate compartment from the rifle. However, if it’s an SBR, my carry license applies. I wouldn’t car carry a rifle with a round in the chamber, but a loaded magazine near the rifle or inserted into the mag well is considered loaded in PA law.

Dummy Me

My New Hampshire carry license expires at the end of the month.   I put it in my pocket as a reminder to renew it.   It’s one of those things, the license is superfluous now, since Pennsylvania and New Hampshire have reciprocity, and there’s no other state that New Hampshire gets me that Florida doesn’t already.   So there’s no real need to renew New Hampshire.  But hey, it’s 20 bucks so why not.   Slip it into the pocket this morning so I would remember.

Except I went to get it, and it was gone.   I seem to have lost the damned thing.  The even bigger problem is there’s a good chance it lost it at work.  I’m really hoping I lost it on the lunch break, but I’m not really too sure where it happened, I just know that sometime between before lunch, and when I left work, I no longer could locate my New Hampshire license.

Big fear?  Someone at work will find my license, which has my name, address, and vitals (but thank God not social #) on it, and will freak out and wonder why their IT manager has a “Pistol and Revolver License” from New Hampshire of all places.  I guess now I’m not going to renew now though :)   Either way, you’d be surprised by how many people in this area, because we’re so close to the Garden State, and employ so many people from there (they call it the Garden State because what do you need for a good garden?  Lots of fertilizer.  Their politicians supply it in abundance.) think it’s just a license to possess rather than carry.

The last thing I want is to get a call into the HR droid’s office tomorrow and get questioned why I have a gun license.   I might be entirely too tempted to say “None of your fucking business.”, which could get interesting.  Fortunatly, they’d be utterly screwed without me, but HR droids tend to not care too much about matters beyond keeping the company from being sued, or keeping the blame deflected off them if something is amiss.

I need to be more careful in the future.

Take That, Brady Campaign!

The Tiahrt Amendment stays in place.  Let the hewing and hawing from the anti-gun crowd begin.  Seriously, with everything they put into getting that removed, they have to be feeling pretty browbeat right now.  Gun control is a dying issue.   We shouldn’t get complacent, but we have them on the run folks.

Ban Bike Tires, For the Children

I’m always wondering what New Jersey is going to stoop to next.   Apparently, it’s banning quick release bike tires for tires under a certain size.  They are prone to accidents:

(AP) TRENTON, N.J. Certain bicycles with quick-release wheels couldn’t be sold in New Jersey under legislation approved Monday by the Assembly. The bikes allow wheels to be removed without tools so they can be quickly secured with a chain lock or transported in vehicles. Lawmakers said they are prone to accidents. Under the bill, it would be illegal to sell bicycles with quick-release wheels if the bicycle has a front wheel less than 20 inches in diameter. Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, a Democrat from Gloucester, said the bill mainly targets children’s bicycles.

How many times did we fall off our bikes when we were kids?  Several for me, and I’m just fine.   Of course, others would say that explains a lot.

Gyrojet: Precursor to Guided Ammunition?

Tam reminded me of an old movie with Tom Selleck called Runaway.  I didn’t think anyone else would remember this.   Heat seeking bullets might not be too far fetched though.   I mean, you won’t get bullets to turn corners and do aerial acrobatics, but minor corrections and some degree of guidance might be possible.  Back during Vietnam, there was a type of gun introduced that, well, wasn’t even really a firearm.   It’s actually a miniature rocket gun called the Gyrojet.   It looks something like this:

These were tested in Vietnam, and although the projectiles hit harder than a .45 ACP at distance, they were ineffective at close ranges, and left a smoke trail back to the shooter.  You can actually buy these, and there is still some ammunition left for it out there, though it’s outrageously expensive.  If you want to see one up close, there are a few of them in the National Firearms Museum at NRA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.

If we used the same idea today, with modern technology, it might actually be possible to create a projectile for a weapon such as this with some form of guidance on it.  I don’t know how practical it would be, but it sure would be pretty cool.  We’re still a long ways off from deer cooking ballistics, though.

Sticking With New Theme

Judging from the reaction, everyone seems to like the new theme.  It works better for most people, I think.  I like it as well.  I’ve made a few minor modifications to address some suggestions that hopefully are implemented to everyone’s satisfaction.  Any further suggestions are, of course, welcome.

John McCain: “It Was The Gay Sweaters”

Apparently John McCain has found the reason his candidacy is sinking.   No, it’s not his blatant disregard for the First Amendment.   It’s the “gay sweaters”.

According to one insider, the knit-picking was the crescendo of a tirade by the Arizona senator, in which he blistered aides about the minutiae of the campaign. While many septuagenarians live in a perpetual state of sweater weather, McCain reportedly declared his frustration with being told to don the perceived homosexual outerwear in order to look younger and more approachable.

Riiight… it doesn’t have anything to do with pissing off Republican voters at all.  They were willing to overlook his assault on the first amendment through campaign finance reform, and see past his support for the immigration bill, but the gay sweaters were just too much!

On the bright side, this at least opens the door for Ron Paul to blame his footwear when his campaign starts circling the bowl.

Philly Gun Law Suit Goes Ahead

Yep, those are two words.  Philadelphia city officials are moving ahead with their lawsuit against the Commonwealth for failing to let them pass gun laws:

Asked if he was aware of any Pennsylvania case of a similar nature, Bochetto said, “This would be a case of first impression. If you look at the legal definition of a state-created danger, we meet every standard. . . . There is empirical evidence that is unmistakable to demonstrate this.”

Bochetto said the suit also asks the court to reinterpret the state statute that gives the commonwealth control over gun laws to the detriment of local government.

This is a state created danger?   I’m pretty sure this is a criminal created danger.   These people are delusional.  The courts have already upheld preemption in Ortiz v. Commonwealth.  He can ask the Court of Common Pleas to reinterpret all he wants, there’s controlling precedent they are bound by, and the answer will be “no”.   This is just a dog and pony show designed to allow the city politicians to continue to deflect blame for their own failures.

If they were serious about fighting crime in the city, they could start by working to get judges like this off the bench.

1000th Post & A New Look

This is my 1000th post since I started more than six months ago. That either means I’m doing a good job, or I need to shut up, or maybe both! I’m not sure which.

I decided to give the blog a makeover. There are a few reasons for this. For one, I think the old blog look was kind of tough to navigate and read sometimes. For two, the theme was breaking YouTube videos for some people. For three, I was starting to think the old theme was gaudy.

But I am not one to push something on my readers, so if you don’t like the new digs, say something in the comments. I won’t get offended; it’s not really my theme, I just doctored someone else’s. You have a few days to convince me that I should go back to the old theme :) I’ll take few comments as a signal that everyone thinks the new look and format is groovy, or you’re reading me through RSS and could care less. Any suggestions for improvements are welcome, though, I’m an engineer and not a graphic artist, so my ability to implement suggestions may be limited.  There may be some minor adjustments happening in the next few days as well.
