Done With The Gun Show Circuit
Well, we finished with our last gun show before the election. Overall, I think the Allentown show was pretty successful for us. I managed to keep my second day haul down to a few cleaning tools, some more beef jerky, some ammo, and a second Nagant bayonet — only about 40 more dollars.
We got a few more names for our list, many of them from Pennsylvania’s fifteenth district, which has no EVC currently. That gives us a good start if we decide to take it over, or help someone get started up there. Charlie Dent is the endorsed Congressional incumbent up there, and they have some good state reps, so it’s an easier district than ours.
We handed out all our McCain/Palin bumper stickers, which was quite a few of them. A Lehigh County GOP volunteer stopped by and dropped off a whole big stack of them, which we ran out of an hour before the show ended. I had one guy stop by looking for Palin stuff, and offered him a bumper stickers that were just McCain, and he said he’d stop by later when we had one with Palin on it. Can’t say I blame him.
I do appreciate the irony of shilling for McCain at a gun show. If you had told me even a year ago that would be the case, I wouldn’t have believed it possible. More than a few people I talked to were aware of his record on the issue, but were scared to death of Obama. We all are. For me it was Obama’s threatning to pull the licenses of TV and radio stations that really got me fired up to hand out McCain stuff. If NRA wants to jump on board later, that’s great, but we have to defeat Obama in Pennsylvania. We just have to.
What I’m learning from this is that people aren’t as well informed as you might think they are. To a large degree, I think a lot of gun owners wouldn’t pay much attention to politics if it were not for this issue, and that explains a lot of NRA’s electoral muscle. I was happy to inform more than a few gun owners about Attorney General Corbett (A+ rated and endorsed), and more importantly about his opponent. Corbett is the reason I can travel to Florida and be armed 90% of the way, and in Florida, after years of Pennsylvania having reciprocity with hardly anyone. Corbett also quickly handled the mess a year or so ago when local and state police were suggesting that they wouldn’t fully recognize reciprical permits. So for guns, he’s a good guy. I’m happy to help get his name out there.
Bitter and I have plenty of Tom Manion signs left over, since that show only got a few people from our district. A few places of public property in our area got tagged by Murphy drones, we’re going to go counter attack, and get the remaining out to gun stores, gun ranges, and gun clubs.
This week is going to be busy. I’m speaking at Branch Valley Fish, Game and Forestry Assocation on Tuesday, my own club on Wednesday, Silhouette match again on Thursday, and hopefully speaking to my club’s archers on Friday. Saturday we have the ANJRPC Annual Banquet, which Stephen Halbrook will be keynoting at, and Sunday will be the Sportsmen for McCain Rally in Oley. I will find time for blogging in there, I promise.
We’re Campaigning Here in Allentown
Day two of the Keystone Eastern Gun Show in Allentown. Ran into one reader already. It’s always one of these things, that I can’t believe people show up here to read my babblings. Just ran into a rare sighting of the endangered camouflage breasted New York City gun owner. The big goal for today is not spending more money, in addition to campaigning. I do need to get more jerky though.

We’re trying to let as many people as we can know about the Sportsmen for McCain rally in Oley, PA next Sunday at the Pike Township Sportsmen’s Assocation. McCain and Palin are also appearing at a Road to Victory Rally at Lehigh University‘s Stabler Hall this Wednesday October 8th, at 10:30AM. They are handing out tickets at Westgate Mall in Bethlehem.
We literally can’t get enough McCain/Palin yard signs. We’ve handed out several dozen already. Technically speaking, the ticket is not yet endorsed by NRA yet, but we’ve made the decision to put out his stuff, because that’s what people are asking for.
One candidate we’re also working hard to spread the word about is Tom Corbett. Our Attorney General does not have the name recognition among sportsmen that other candidates do, but we’re trying to get his name and record out there. His opponent wants to use the Office of the Attorney General here in Pennsylvania to pick fights with gun owners in the commonwealth. After this show ends, Bitter and I are going to get out and put our remaining Manion and Corbett signs up on public roads so his name gets out there.
At the Show
Bitter and I are at the show working our table on behalf of pro-gun candidates in Bucks County and also here in Lehigh County since PA-15 doesn’t have an EVC. I already ran into two readers! Check out our table spread:

It’s actually fairly dangerous for me to be in a gun show for an entire day with Bitter available to hold down the table while I wander. The haul, so far:
- Two packages of beef jerky. Hot and Spicy, and Sweet.
- One 1lb bottle of Unique powder, and one 1lb bottle of Varget
- One box of Corbon .380 ACP.
- One Kel-Tec P3AT to shoot the .380 ACP ammunition.
- One leather pocket holster for Kel-Tec P3AT.
- And I’m thinking I need a GI sling for the M1.
It’s a good thing this is our last gun show before the election, because I’m going to go broke otherwise. And there’s still tomorrow to get through! The outreach is going well, though. We’ve talked to a lot of people, and have a few more volunteers for our list. I didn’t get the O-Match thing working due to touch screen issues, and the need to sleep, but we have the screen looping the NRA videos with stills of endorsed candidates to vote for. It has helped grab a few people so we can reel them in.
I Don’t Want To Know
I don’t know whether this is disturbing, or kind of hot.
Tool of the Week
This guy left a comment on my blog stating:
I’m an NRA member, have a concealed carry permit from the state of Ohio, a .45 Smith & Wesson I carry for protection and I have no qualms voting for Obama. When you say there was nothing incorrect in the NRA ads about Obama’s history you’re wrong. I cleared up the misconceptions here:

I welcome any gun owner to watch that and debate me on the points.
Dude, did you even bother to actually check this guy’s record? If you don’t believe he’s got it in for gun owners, you’re a tool. I’d be happy to debate you, but it’s kind of pointless when the guy’s record is staring at you in the face as plain as day. It’s not my problem you don’t want to hear it. Does it even bother you that your chosen candidate apparently think it’s an acceptable campaign tactic to threaten the broadcast licenses of anyone who says things about him that he disapproves of? Is this the America you want to live in? His blog is here if you want to go have a talk with him.
What About McCain?
NRA Grades and Endorsements for 2008 are out. Conspicuously absent is the presidential race. Three possibilities here:
- NRA has decided to endorse and is waiting for a better press cycle where the endorsement will make a bigger splash.
- NRA is still not decided on endorsement and is wavering based on McCain’s record.
- NRA is still not decided on endorsement and is worried McCain won’t win.
I’m really hoping it’s number one. The base is on board. I’ve yet to show up to an event and not had a rush on McCain/Palin items. Even if NRA is not yet on board the McCain train, gun owners most certainly are. Palin is that good, and Barack Obama is that bad. I’ve made clear to people that he’s not endorsed yet, but I give the people what they want, and what they want is McCain.
NRA would be understandably concerned about their record on endorsements, which is perfect. NRA’s first endorsement was Ronald Reagan over Jimmy Carter, Reagan won. They endorsed Reagan a second time, and he won again. George H.W. Bush was endorsed, and won. Then his endorsement was withdrawn, and he lost re-election. Dole was not endorsed, and lost. George W. Bush was endorsed twice, and won both times. Some might thing this doesn’t mean anything, but it does. If NRA endorses and the candidate loses, the meme around Washington will be NRA has lost its clout. Heller took away their scare mongering, and they are now a paper tiger. Hunters will feel safe because they know we can’t take their guns, so lets go after the guns we can take, like those dangerous people who buy evil assault weapons. And you know, all that lead is bad for the environment, so we better ban it.
The stakes in this election are high, so high I think NRA is nuts if they don’t endorse McCain/Palin. McCain himself is nothing to write home about, but it’s a ticket now, and his selection of Plain is a good signal that he doesn’t think we gun folks have cooties. I understand NRA wanting to preserve their perfect endorsement record in presidential races, but we can’t afford that this election. All stops must be pulled out to defeat Barack Obama. This is one of those cases where you fight, even if the chance of victory is remote. As it is, I don’t think it’s remote; it’s going to be close… and NRA owes its membership to get behind the candidate they are already behind.
Bill Clinton on Glass-Steagall Repeal
Bill Clinton isn’t blaming the Republicans for deregulating banks. I think Clinton is right on this one. Also, if you’re looking for a great outline of the current credit crisis, head over to Marginal Revolution.
Another Gun Control Group Goes TU
Joe tells us that the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence is, for the most part, politically dead. Seems they had a little cash flow problem. Maybe they need to give Paulson a call.
Quote of the Day
From Bruce, who liked Palin’s performance last night:
Now, let’s get to work.
I’ll be doing a little door-to-door campaigning with the McCain people in Exeter on Saturday morning. Shoot me an e-mail if you wanna join us. Also, I was at the Stratham office earlier today. They’ve got some of them honkin’ big McCain/Palin yard signs (think sheet of plywood) if
you want one.
This definitely isn’t the election for complacency. Just running down the ways Obama can screw us, without executing a head on attack, is rather frightning. And that’s just assuming we’re not looking at another attempt at a new assault weapons ban, which I can promise you will be worse than the last one.
