Getting It Right

I opted not to live blog the Dianne Feinstein hearing on her gun ban today. There just wasn’t enough coffee in the world to tackle that this morning.

However, NRA did have someone watching and live tweeting responses to the various claims by anti-gun advocates both at the witness table and behind the Senate microphones. The immediate responses – and the sheer quality of them – was fantastic. Honestly, they didn’t just “do” social media today, they really got it right.

For example, when Philly Mayor Michael Nutter claimed that it was “absurd” that anyone could ever use an AR-15 for self-defense, he added that so-called “assault rifles” are only used to go on the offense against victims. Quickly, this was the NRA’s tweet:

As anti-gunners consistently tried to claim that these semi-automatic firearms aren’t in common use:

When Sen. Feinstein tried to act like the last gun ban was no big deal, and that her new proposal is just a continuation of it:

When Feinstein complained that manufacturers were trying to skirt her ban back during the 90s, NRA pointed out that she now considers a loophole an action that was simply complying with the law:

There were so many more highlights, but you can just check out the Twitter feed to see it. They really did a great job today.

Taking a Look at Bloomberg’s Mayors in 2013

It seems like we just put the presidential election behind us, and yet, there are already more elections to think about in terms of gun rights. Most political observers are already looking to 2014. However, Pennsylvania gun owners should be looking to this year’s municipal elections against mayors who have been lobbying Washington, DC officials in support of a ban on semi-automatic rifles and more via Bloomberg’s MAIG.

Many of the mayoral races are unchallenged, but others are closer than you would expect. Penndel’s 2009 mayoral race was decided by just 68 votes. Those in Pennsylvania might think that since Penndel is a pretty tiny borough, that seems like a pretty big margin. However, it doesn’t take into account significantly decreased turnouts in these off-year elections. Fewer than 26% of registered voters in the county actually cast a ballot in local races that year.

In the next county over, the contest for Pottstown mayor was decided by just 2 percentage points – even as write-in candidates took 5 points in the race. Somewhat farther north, the mayor of Roseto was elected by only 53 votes. Out in the western part of the state, Ingram’s anti-gun advocate mayor won his last election by just 9 votes.

If you want to help weaken Bloomberg’s anti-gun alliance, then this is a great way to start. Find out about your own races and get involved in the races around you if you can. Think about the race decided by 9 votes – you could help reach that many voters in one hour on a Saturday afternoon.

Testimony Today Before the Senate

Dave Hardy is testifying today before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the phony baloney assault weapon issue. You can find his testimony here. Wish him luck. Locally, also on the agenda, is Philadelphia Mayor Nutter, and Professor Nick Johnson from Fordham Law School. Do you see why our opponents are scared? The front lines of this battle isn’t out in rural America or flyover country. Fordham is in New York City. Professor Johnson is one of the many Bucks County residents who commute to Manhattan.

The Second Amendment has many front lines, but one of the tips of the spears is right here, and that spear is aimed square the heart of Gotham. Bloomberg just had to spend 2 million dollars, and bring to bear the full weight of the White House, and Chicago machine to defend a seat he never should have had to defend. Bloomberg’s other “big win?” He claims Joe Baca, who was gerrymandered into a difficult race.

This is not someone starting from a position of strength. This is someone making easy bets and hoping he can build himself a reputation. What we need to do is keep attacking, and attacking relentlessly, until his cause is all but lost. It is incumbent upon us to ensure this is their Battle of the Bulge, and there’s ample evidence to believe it can be that, if we play our cards right.

PA Attorney General Goes National on Gun Control

Not content to simply add new concealed carry restrictions, Attorney General Kathleen Kane has decided to promote bans on commonly owned firearms and accessories used by Pennsylvania residents in a national television appearance. She took to Chris Matthews’ show to say that Pennsylvanians would gladly accept new gun restrictions.

Halvorson Concedes

Well, it is Chicago. What other urban and near suburban districts can we get Bloomberg to dump millions of dollars into to defend? Of course, you know that won’t be the spin here. This will be touted as a huge victory for gun control, and evidence that Obama’s agenda is popular with voters.

Excellent!

Magpul is moving Colorado residents to the head of the queue:

We are proud to announce that within a matter of days we will be going live with a new program. Due to a bill currently moving through the Colorado legislature, there is the possibility that Colorado residents’ ability to purchase standard capacity magazines will soon be infringed. Before that happens, and Magpul is forced to leave the state in order to keep to our principles, we will be doing our best to get standard capacity PMAGs into the hands of any Colorado resident that wants them.

I hope no one has issues with this. I’m waiting for more PMAGs, and I am totally OK with this. Given the threat they face, the state needs to be flooded with unmarked magazines. They are working on programs for other affected states as well. Good on them. Magpul has been great during this time of crisis.

Reporting on Shall-Issue in Illinois

Thirdpower is keeping up with the situation. A summary would seem to be the Chicago politicians are still trying to crap all over everything. Looks like their pet bill was withdrawn, so now they are attempting to crapify NRA’s bill. Like petulant children who are mad they can’t have everything their way.

It’s Gadgety

I think the fun thing about this Wired article is that I agree, but I have zero accessories for any of my ARs. All of them are plain as jane. I don’t even like optics, and use the standard A2 sights on the carry handle. From the article:

“You’re doing great,” said Justin Harvel, founder of Black Rain Ordnance and maker of the gun I was shooting.

“It’s not me,” I replied. “I’ve never shot like this in my life. It’s gotta be this gun.”

“Yeah, it’s definitely not your daddy’s hunting rifle, is it?”

Nope, you can shoot it all afternoon, whereas daddy’s hunting rifle will hurt you since it’s more powerful shot-for-shot. The article contains a number of inaccuracies, but is overall decent. For instance, the NRA never supported the 1994 ban, even after the sunset provision was inserted.

More on the Halvorson Race

I have to agree with Glenn Reynolds, that when you have to dump a cool two million to get an anti-gun politician elected in Chicago that’s not a position of strength. But a Kelly win here is going to be spun as a bellwether, and you can bet Bloomberg and our opponents are going to ride that particular horse as far as it will take them. We’ll know shortly what the result is. Given what’s been arrayed against us, and the proclivities of the district, I’m not all that optimistic.

This district can’t be all that different from Allyson Schwartz’s district here, and I can’t fathom that seat ever going to someone like Halvorson. But Schwartz’s seat is going to be empty when she runs for Governor, so I would say if any of you are reading this, and are union members or other such Democrats who like guns, let’s see if we can get Bloomberg to burn 2 million dollars defending that seat too.

Justice Memo Gets More Traction

Unfortunately, it’s only getting traction in conservative media, appearing at Breitbart, The Washington Times, and The Washington Examiner. The media I don’t think has much incentive to report on a story that’s bad for the Administration. Politico is currently running a story about Obama’s faltering gun strategy in the Senate, as our opponents worry about the ticking clock. I’m still concerned, but becoming less concerned about Coburn’s participation in this charade, since it’s looking to me like his participation may be to stall for time and act as a spoiler. But keep in mind this is just rank speculation at this point.
