Quebec’s Response to Dawson College Shooting

Some additional provincial restrictions on firearms, and a program to ensure that folks report suspicious activity, whatever that might be, to the gestapo authorities:

The law bans the possession of firearms in schools and daycare centres and on public and school transportation.

Fines for contravening the law forbidding firearm possession on those premises range from $500 to $5,000.

That’s great.  I’m sure that’ll deter people who are planning a mass killing spree.

Under the new rules, teachers, gun-club owners, and public-transit and health-care workers are also required to report suspicious behaviour relating to firearms, even if it contradicts doctor-patient or any other confidentiality.

Further, there will be mandatory supervision of target practice where restricted and banned firearms are in use.

Wendy Cukier of the Coalition for Gun Control says the new provincial law is a step in the right direction.

It’s just a step in the right direction.  It won’t be enough until Canadians can’t own anything more dangerous than a BB gun.  Of course, they’ll be coming for that eventually too.

Seeking Input from Sportsmen

The Governor’s Advisory Council is looking for opinions from Pennsylvania sportsmen on how to improve the hunting experience in our state.  My suggestion would be Sunday hunting, and lowering of fees for out of state residents.

Pennsylvania dropped its ban on Sunday fishing in 1937, and other blue laws, such as those limiting the sale of liquor and beer, have been greatly relaxed. With the exception of car sales, hunting remains the only activity that’s restricted on Sunday in Pennsylvania.

Seems silly to me.  If it helps slow the decline in hunting, it seems like a no brainer.  Hunting is big money for Pennsylvania, which is why even Ed Rendell is worried about it’s decline.  Look how much trouble states like New Jersey have with wildlife management, since it’s almost entirely destroyed its hunting and shooting culture?  It would be a pity if that happened here.

McCain is Many Things

But I wouldn’t go so far as to classify him as anti-gun.  Here’s John McCain’s two major sins when it comes to gun rights:

  • He supports regulating private sales.
  • He was a lead sponsor of the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act which makes it more difficult for second amendment activists, or any other advocacy group, to defeat incumbent politicians.

That’s basically it.  He was voting against assault weapons bans when it wasn’t popular to do so.  He’s bringing young, pro-gun reformers like Jindal, Palin and Pawlenty onto the national stage, which will enable them to be future leaders in Republican politics.  Would you listen to guy that says something like this:

And I believe Gun Owners of America. I believe Larry Pratt. He has never lied to me. He has never told me one thing, done another and then changed his mind. John McCain has – often. And he does it on all the important issues of the day – from immigration to tax cuts to abortion.

Well, you just ruined any credibility you might have had.  GOA does exaggerate and mislead.  It’s been docuemnted here more than a few times.  Our choice this election is not a panacea, but McCain is no better or worse than other Presidents gun owners have gotten behind.  They were all imperfect, and we managed to make progress while each of them have been in office.  That progress could likely come to a screeching halt, even reverse itself, if Obama is allowed to occupy the White House with an overwhelmingly Democratic congress run by the likes of Nancy Pelosi.  That’s the reality we’re facing if gun owners follow Farah’s advice.  If gun owners want better representation at the national level, sitting this one out isn’t how to get it.  Let’s keep Obama out of the White House, and then hopefully we’ll get a chance to see some of this new blood run for national office.

Why Gun Control Fails

Because Americans generally don’t support it when faced with the stark reality of a temporary breakdown in law and order.

Charlie Marshall, a towboat captain who plans to watch over his home in Gretna, had a bleaker view of local law enforcement abilities.

“If the cops are looting, who’s going to protect my ass?” he asked.

After Katrina, some police officers were spotted taking basic supplies from stores, and, in isolated cases, items that didn’t appear necessary for survival.

Though frustrated after having his purchase of a .22-caliber rifle delayed by a routine background check, Marshall still had several boxes of bullets and buckshot for his shotgun and 9 mm pistol.

I would say if he’s got the shotgun and 9mm pistol the .22 rifle isn’t going to add much, unless it’s a sacrificial gun to turn over to the NOPD in the event they start confiscating firearms again.

Hope that we can all be one big happy …

gun hating family.  New Jersey State Senator Sandra Bolden hopes that one gun a month will spread to neighboring states.  What part of “No” didn’t she understand?

Smallbore Gun Blog Rifle Match

The time for the summer gun blog rifle match is running low.  So far I only have two smallbore rifle entries.  I have a few high-power entries, and am hoping for more.  If you have some time before the 21st, when the match ends, feel free to head to the range and shoot the match.  There’s no such thing as a score that’s too embarrassing.  We’re all amateurs here.  I shot smallbore rifle yesterday with a production CZ-452 with its factory open sights.  Ammunition was Aguila Match Rifle ammunition:

  1. 48-0X – Standing
  2. 68-0X – Sitting
  3. 83-2X – Prone

Total score is 199 out of 300.  So you can see that doesn’t even get me to NRA sharpshooter classification.  The smallbore match is only at 50 yards, so if you can find a place where you can shoot three position rifle, you can compete, and probably beat me.  The summer match ends the last day of summer.

NJ vs. PA Practical Rifle Match

Looks like Langhorne Rod and Gun Club hosted a pretty interesting practical rifle match over the weekend.  I may have to look into joining this club, since it seems they do a lot of fun matches with rifles we’re told have no sporting use.

More on Laser Training

Thanks to Robb Allen for getting some video of me shooting at the shoot house, where Todd was training us on how to use a laser to make yourself a better shooter.  One of the major weaknesses in my shooting is breathing.  Locking my knees is a silhouette habit, where you’re more concerned with a stable shooting position than you are with recoil management.  But breathing is a problem.  It’s often I find myself missing a string of animals when I realize I’m laxing on my breathing discipline.  I’m totally amazed that Todd can see this just by looking at a laser.

I need to look into some Grecian Formula for Men or something, because I am pretty grey from the back.
