How the Tide Turns

Publicola is blogging again, after a long hiatus. His blog predates this one by a good bit. I agree with his analysis about what’s going on in Colorado. What they are trying to do is swing the pendulum back in the other direction. No new major gun control has passed in this country since the 1990s, really at either the state or federal level. That’s largely because of the drubbing we gave them at the ballot box after the smoke cleared. Well, it’s twenty years later and Obama and the far-left Democrats are betting that the gun vote is built into the Republican count, and that the gun issue can no longer deliver swing voters. They are throwing down, and betting they can slap us around with impunity, and there’s nothing we can do about it. This is what that looks like in New Jersey, as Democrats tell gun owners they won’t get to have a say before the voting:

We already saw a devastating loss in New York, and New Jersey and California aren’t far behind. This is certainly not good, but in the big picture gun owners have been punching bags for politicians in those states for years, and we all know it. It’s like showing how tough you are by beating up the fat kid after lunch. Colorado is different, because it is a state that has typical western attitudes when it comes to civilian gun ownership. New gun restrictions there, even modest ones, is a much bigger deal than in the states anti-gun forces have already largely won. Any victory there will provide a template that will be repeated in other traditionally pro-gun swing states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, you name it. Once the dominoes start to fall, it’s going to be extremely difficult to stop. This is why they cannot be allowed to score any wins at all. This isn’t about reasonableness. This isn’t about people coming together to solve problems. Politics is not either of those things: it is about power, and nothing else, and the side that is more effective at wielding power is the one that goes home victorious, and the other beaten up and bloodied in ways that couldn’t have been imagined when you went in thinking they were going to be reasonable. There is no reasonableness in the political process, there is only victory and defeat.

If they beat us in Colorado, we have to punish those responsible in the next election cycle. If Colorado passes gun control, and no one loses their seats, it’s going to be over for gun rights in Colorado, and possibly other states. Once politicians learn you can’t threaten their seats, your state will be New Jersey and California very very fast. Political elites don’t like civilian gun ownership. They don’t really like you either. We’re going to need all hands on deck to try to stop this, and failing that, to deliver the punishment that is necessary at election time. The progressive-left is calling what they think is a bluff. We have to show them it’s no bluff, and that we still hold a winning hand.

It’s Go Time in Colorado

Voting could occur on the House floor tomorrow, so it is imperative to call or e-mail your lawmakers. Shut the capitol down! Arma Borealis has a handy list of e-mails you can use, along with a sample letter.

Biden Lobbying in Colorado

There’s evidence appearing that the Administration is indeed serious about backing gun control, by the fact that Vice President Biden is out in Colorado drumming up support among Democrats for crapping on your constitutional rights. We are in real trouble in Colorado, and Coloradans all have to stand up and be heard from. More importantly, because the Democrats have screwed you, volunteer for pro-gun candidates in 2014 and teach these folks a lesson.

I never would have figured Colorado, of all places. I would have thought Pennsylvania before Colorado, to be honest. I’ve always thought we’re a more solidly blue state. But one reason we’re not in trouble yet, and I stress yet (don’t count on Republicans, be heard from) is because our House, Senate and Governorship are controlled by the GOP. It might actually be the case that Pennsylvania is more purple than Colorado.

I think it’s incumbent among gun owners everywhere to remember a simple saying, “Don’t get mad, get even.” The 2014 elections will be coming up, and no matter what our legislators do to us, let’s agree to get even.

Make it So! Elect Debbie Halvorson

Bloomberg has completely thrown down in the special election race in Illinois with his million dollar investment to defeat Debbie Halvorson. It’s incumbent on every gun owner in Illinois to make sure it’s a bad one. Getting Halvorson ahead of the pack, and helping out her campaign, if it leads to victory on election day, would send a huge message to the rest of the country about how good Bloomberg’s money is when put against our grassroots. I know I haven’t been too keen on the Democratic Party lately, but this is an overwhelmingly Democratic district, and Halvorson is enough of a threat that Bloomberg thought it was worth a million dollars, and this is shaping up to be a strategic race.

Michael Reagan on Father’s Endorsement of 1994 Ban

The short of it was that he was afflicted with alzheimer’s, and the people who were handling him did not share his beliefs on gun rights. I’d embed the video, but it will auto play, but keep that in mind if you click through.

The New Jersey Bills up Tomorrow on the Floor

Despite 500 people showing up during a snowstorm on Wednesday to protest, the committee went ahead with a vote anyway, and passed 20 or so horrible bills out of committee. ANJRPC notes:

Bills set to move to full Assembly Vote On Thursday, February 21. Please start contacting both of your Assembly Members and urge them not to support any new anti-gun measures. Thank you to the 500 Second Amendment supporters who attended today’s hearings and held legislators’ feet to the fire!

Those bills are listed here. Let me translate this for you. In order, they would:

  1. AB588 – Ban most rifle ammunition.
  2. A1116 – Must report lost and stolen firearms to police. Fines and a 180 day firearm purchase prohibition for violators.
  3. A1329 – Reduce magazine capacity from 15 to 10 rounds. No grandfathering.
  4. A1387 – Weapon free “safety zones” within 1000 feet around public property like schools, parks, public housing, or other public buildings. Specifically applies to unknowingly being within 1000 feet.
  5. A1613 – Bullshit task force.
  6. A3510 – Requires training to purchase a firearm and for FID cards.
  7. A3583 – Another bullshit task force.
  8. A3645 – Requires face-to-face transactions for ammo.
  9. A3646 – Licensing for ammunition vendors.
  10. A3659 – Weapons 50 caliber or larger are destructive devices.
  11. A3666 – Mail order of ammunition prohibited.
  12. A3668 – Prohibits state investments in companies that make so-called “assault weapons.”
  13. A3687 – No guns for people who are on a secret government list.
  14. A3717 – Submit mental health records to NICS.
  15. A3748 – End private sales. There were private sales in NJ?
  16. A3750 – All ammunition sales registered and reported to the State Police.
  17. A3754 – Allows mental health professionals to order firearms be seized form patients. This will ensure no one who owns guns seeks mental health treatment, even if they may need it.
  18. A3772 – Require picture ID on FID cards.
  19. A3788 – Abolish access to firearm records. This one actually looks good.
  20. A3796 – Allows 90 days to dispose of unlawful firearms.
  21. A3797 – Requires reporting of ballistics data for seized guns to federal system.
  22. ACR180 – Bullshit resolution urging feds to shit on your rights.
  23. AR143 – Bullshit resolution supporting gun buybacks.
  24. AR144 – Bullshit resolution on mental health.

Flood the Colorado State House

Tomorrow they are planning on having a House vote in the Colorado legislature on four bills, a magazine ban, repeal of campus carry, a gun tax, and a ban on private transfers:

WE NEED YOU to stand united in this monumental fight and COME TO THE HOUSE GALLERY on Friday, February 15th to hold your state Representative accountable by making sure they vote NO on these restrictive bills.

Starts 9:00AM tomorrow. If you can’t attend in person, call.

Thursday News Dump

A rather lengthly gun club board meeting last night interfered with by ability to get anything ready for this morning, so a news dump it will be. Sometimes our club meetings go late. You know when it starts off with 7 agenda items, and then works up to 10, you’re going to be there for a while. But I digress:

People are still angry in New York. To paraphrase the most interesting man in the world, “Stay angry, my friends.” At least some in the GOP aren’t happy with the sellout.

NRA scrubs its “enemies list.” Big news to MSNBC. People kept bringing that up, but it was ancient history. One of the companies listed was “Bell Atlantic.” How long has it been since Bell Atlantic existed? It needed to either be revised or taken down, because it was dated.

Some guy claiming to be an NRA lobbyist talked about some “Connecticut Effect,” except it turns out the guy isn’t an NRA lobbyist, by contract or otherwise.

NFL players are being featured in MAIG ads promoting gun control. If anyone bases their public policy opinions on what NFL players think, I really wish they’d stop voting.

Stay tuned to the Colorado State Shooting Association for the latest news coming out of the… err… hang on, let me look this up… Centennial State? You should also join.

Biden notes the sense of urgency over gun control measures. Well, sure he does. If people spend too much time researching it, and thinking about it, they’ll realize gun control is what you do instead of something. He also notes that the Administration is counting on “legitimate media” for a successful gun control effort. Legitimate in this case meaning media willing to lie through their teeth.

The Full Monty in California. A comprehensive semi-auto ban. Back to the 19th century with you. Why are gun control advocates so… reactionary? Also, a ban on shotgun rifle combinations? Is this even an imaginary problem, let alone a real one?

Americans are losing trust in government. Some of we Americans never really had any to begin with. Ann Althouse looks at why Americans have lost their devotion to the future.

Joe has a quote that warns against complacency. Probably every gun-rights activist out there had a point where they realized the Second Amendment was considered no real barrier to the power elites, and got very angry. The pity is a lot of people still have the mindset of “This couldn’t happen in America. We have the Second Amendment!” The truth is it can, and it’s happening right now.

Gun Control and the Constitution.

“I’m a hunter and gun owner, but”…. is just as much of a refuge of scoundrels as “I support the Second Amendment, but.” You ever notice that these self-hating gun owners never appear on forums, blogs or other online places to actually argue their point of view? They only appear in the media when it becomes convenient for the powers that be. If you’ve never met hunters and shooters who support some gun control, you haven’t been in this issue long enough, but I think a lot of these guys are frauds and sheissters who are trying to buy legitimacy for bankrupt arguments. Remember that John Kerry is, legitimately, a life-long hunter too.

Bloomberg can have my styrofoam when he pries it from my cold dead hands. The good news is that 2013 is a mayoral election year in New York, so we only have to put up with this insufferable busybody for another year. Not that I expect he’ll go away and retire quietly.

Gun Owners Can’t Have Bad Days. You have to develop a certain sense of not giving a shit what other people think about you in this issue. But making it hard for gun owners to seek mental health treatment without risking their right is a real problem, and is something that deserved to be talked about.

Illinois Can Beat Back Bloomberg

Illinois gun owners are organized in a way that you don’t see in pretty much any other state. So when I see that Debbie Halvorson is telling the media that Bloomberg’s anti-gun ad buy in Chicago is actually giving her a boost in the parts of the district outside of the city, I see a huge opportunity for gun owners in Illinois to send a message to Bloomberg and the Chicago political machine.

This is a special election, which means that turnout models will be very different than a general election – certainly different than a presidential election year.

Illinois gun owners from anywhere within driving distance should be in that district for each of the next two weekends helping with GOTV efforts. Knock on doors, make phone calls, do whatever is necessary to help turn out the vote in the areas where Halvorson is strong. Most voters really don’t care about gun control, they want to hear answers on the economy. Don’t let Bloomberg’s millions buy this race for an issue that most voters really don’t care about.
