Obama’s Waffling on Guns

Cam Edwards outlines some Obama’s contradictions on guns:

But if he holds with the statement that he believes in the individual right to keep and bear arms, but the D.C. Gun Ban somehow passes constitutional muster, I think it’s fair to ask (as Jacob Sullum suggested when I interviewed him today) Senator Obama to name an example of a gun control law that he thinks does or would violate the 2nd Amendment. As it stands, Obama’s turning an “individual right” into something the goverment can violate at will.

It’s hard to really condemn Obama on this when President Bush’s own administratation will be arguing the same thing in front of the Supreme Court in a few weeks.  Obama is just lip service.  Bush is lip service, and is willing to throw us a few table scraps every now and then.  I think we deserve better out of Bush that we’ve gotten, and if gun owners fail to push McCain over the top, McCain will only have Bush to blame for it.

Gun Rights in an Urban Setting

With the leading Democratic candidate for president that believe “in keeping guns out of our inner cities, and that our leaders must say so in the face of the gun manufacturer’s lobby,” it’s a very good thing we have guys like Pro-Gun Progressive on our side.  Click on the link to his video.  That’s about as favorable a report I’ve seen from media, especially local media, on a right to carry bill to date.  And to think, it’s Baltimore local media.  Will Obama reconsider his position on urban gun rights in light of guys like PGP?  It will take more than courting Bill Richardson to convince us.

Maryland Ammo Serialization Bill

From Pro-Gun Progressive:

Read the citizens’ reports on the testimony for MD’s proposed ammo serialization bill, HB517. You’re basically required to turn in all non compliant ammo (yeah, like that’s gonna fly) and only use the encoded, serialized stuff.

Turning in the unserialized ammunition sounds like a fine idea to me.  Be sure to check out the background on the boneheads who are trying to cajole various state governments into buying this scam.

Rising Number of NICS Checks

Ahab reports that NICS is reporting a 5.3% uptick in background checks for January.  Not too surprising to me with gun owners faced with the strong likelihood of Obama the Gun Control Messiah, or Hillary the Power Mad Gun Control Harpy moving into the White House next year.

The Obama Exclusion Zone Project

Dave Kopel is asking for some help in figuring out where gun dealers would be excluded from under Obama’s five mile radius plan.  Here’s one example using King County Washington.

UPDATE: Bitter did her home town in rural Oklahoma.  She had to give up on Northern Virginia, because there’s just too many intersecting circles.   I suspect most places along the east coast are going to be Obama Gun Sales Exclusion Zone.

PSH Alert on National Park Carry

The latest bit of Pants Shitting Hysterics comes to us from The National Parks Conservation Assocation:

Originally written in the 1930s to prevent wildlife poaching, the parks’ firearms regulation was carefully revised during the Reagan Administration to be as narrowly restrictive as possible, while also assisting park personnel to prevent unlawful killing of wildlife. NPCA believes the current regulations strike an appropriate balance between the rights of individuals to possess firearms under state and federal laws and hunt in areas of the National Park System where it is permitted, and the safety of national park visitors and wildlife. NPCA will express its views in the public comment period, but highlighted a few of them today.

Park safety and enjoyment: We believe that enabling individuals to carry loaded guns in national parks will alarm families visiting the parks, and heighten the possibility for deadly visitor conflicts.

It doesn’t seem alarm families anywhere else that have laws allowing licensed individuals to carry firearms.  Why are the National Parks any different?  Why should they be different?
