Wyatt has it. I think one of Obama’s great appeals was the fact that he didn’t seen to practice the politics of race. For many, no doubt, he represented absolution from America’s original sin. After the revelations of Reverend Wright, I think that’s over. America is probably ready to elect a black president, but probably not one that makes race an issue.

Obama’s Pastor
Marshall Manson thinks it’s unfair to castigate Obama for the things his pastor said:
I go to church, and like Senator Obama, I’ve sat quietly in my seat listening to my pastor say things which with I’ve disagreed, oftentimes strongly. But that doesn’t mean that I believe him to be any less a man of God.
God is perfect. Men are fallible. Which means men like Pastor Wright are fallible, too. Pastor Wright brought Barrack Obama closer to God. That’s his life’s purpose. He is not a man of politics. That’s Senator Obama’s territory. And to hold Senator Obama responsible for Pastor Wright’s views is, in my view, totally unfair.
Cam Edwards disagrees with Marshall. Jim Geraghty jumps in as well. I have to side with Cam and Jim on the issue. I could probably stand to hear one or two whacked out things from my pastor, but I doubt I’d stay at a church with a pastor that said the things Wright has said. Disagreement I can tolerate, but based on Wright’s statements, it’s hard for me to avoid coming to the conclusion that he hates his country, and quite possibly a lot of the people in it. If Obama is content to be around that message, and associate it with his campaign, I think it’s appropriate to ask whether he’s the right person to represent all americans, whether they be black, white, hispanic or jew.
What Does ATF Stand For?
Apparently Always Think Forfeitures is one that someone at ATF wants to promote, as in Civil Asset Forfeiture, as in the government being able to take your property without due process.
Blogger Running for Office!
Looks like Clayton Cramer will be joining The Other Sebastian in running for public office. Clayton is a little socially conservative for my northeastern Republican political sensibilities, but I definitely wish him luck in securing a seat in the Idaho Senate. Maybe after this he can run for Larry Craig’s senate seat.
“Speak English” OK’d by City
Joe Vento, owner of Geno’s Steaks in Philadelphia, has been cleared of any wrongdoing when he posted as sign asking patrons to speak english when ordering.
I’m very glad that Joey’s betters have given him the green light, but I’m afraid James Madison already did that. I hope others will join me in saying that the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission can still go to hell for even putting on the charade that they had any authority under any law to make an issue out of this. As Wyatt Earp says, it was a waste of city taxpayer money. Thankfully, the city didn’t make an issue of this to the point where their betters have to remind the City Commission that they are not, in fact, part of Communist Cuba, but are still part of the United States.
Old enough to die for your country …
… old enough to buy a beer, is what I say.  But Obama doesn’t think so.
Drug Raid Gone Wrong
Radley Balko has a new article on the Chesapeake drug raid that went horribly wrong. I think I blogged about that a few months ago when it first happened.
Thoughts on 2008
Well folks, it looks pretty good that we’re going to win on Heller. If I were a betting man, I’d put money on it. Not a guarantee, but the odds look pretty good. But go back and listen to the oral arguments; who are the justices that most are supporting us in the questioning?
- Justice Scalia – Appointed by Ronald Reagan
- Justice Thomas – Appointed by George H.W. Bush
- Justice Alito – Appointed by George W. Bush
- Justice Roberts – Appointed by George W. Bush
- Justice Kennedy – Appointed by Ronald Reagan
This should give you all some idea of the importance of elections. Where do you think we’d be on the Heller case if Al Gore or John Kerry had won in 2000 and 2004 respectively? Given that none of these justices seemed to express support for a really robust second amendment right in the quesetioning, at least one that would make all of us happy, how do you think the right will be constructed in subsequent cases before The Court if we just let Obama or Hillary select the next two, possibly three justices to put on the high court?
For all my complaints about George W. Bush on the gun issue, and despite my blief that Bush is hardly to be considered a conservative, we would not be looking at a very strong possibility of winning this case if gun owners had not put him in the oval office in 2000/2004. We actually need a stronger court, not just at the Supreme Court level, but at the circuit court level too, for the cases which will inevitably be fought after this. I think Heller will be decided narrowly.  If we want to fight the next battles and win, and avoid getting an individual right without meaning, we need to make sure McCain is in the oval office in 2008.
Pennsylvania “Castle Doctrine” Vote
I received the following from the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs:
The House debated the “Reporting Lost & Stolen” amendment till 11:00 last night. It was mostly a speech by Rep. Parker (Phila.) about why this was needed and how it was not an infringement on our rights to buy a firearm. A few other representatives spoke against it, then Rep. Cutler asked to have the amendment withdrawn saying it was unconstitutional based on court rulings that said a convicted felon could not be charged for not reporting, because he would be incriminating himself.
Before Rep. Cutler finished, and any votes could be taken, discussion was cut off because of their rule to end session by 11:00pm.
They were to pick up where they left off at 11:00am this morning. (7 more amendments were filed on the bill last night.) However, when they got to the floor at 11:00, the Democrats were short by about 8 legislators, as they were all in Philly for the Obama rally this morning. When the Republicans made a motion to bring a bill up for vote, the Democrats had to quickly recess for some emergency. They kept everyone waiting around all day to give the 8 missing members a chance to return. When that didn’t happen, they eventually recessed for the day.
They do not return for session until March 31st.
Rumor was that they didn’t have the votes to pass their amendments, so they were going to try to table any further votes on amendments so we couldn’t get any of our amendments voted on either. We’ll have to wait till they return to see what develops.
Thanks to the NRA and John Hohenwarter for working with us on these issues! And thanks to everyone who took the time to contact their legislators on these issues.
It’s good news they don’t think they have enough to get the amendment passed, but it sucks we have to wait until March 31st.
Who’s Third in Line?
Looks like the new Guv can’t keep his pistol properly secured either.
