Media Gets it Right

Fox News hasn’t always gotten its facts on guns right, but it did this time.  I join many other bloggers in praising Fox News for telling the truth about this issue.  It covers exactly the things I highlighted here.  They add:

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

[…]

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

Which is what I suspected.  The guns they recover that have obvious sources from the Mexican or foreign militarys don’t get traced through ATF’s systems.  The other question I have is what percentage of guns the Government of Mexico recovers are from violent individuals and drug cartel members, and what percentage were recovered from people who smuggled the guns back to relatives so they could protect themselves from the individuals I just mentioned.  The latter is a human rights issue, but the Mexican government doesn’t see things that way.

  1. The AP is making it a bigger lie now. From this story:

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recently reported that up to 95 percent of guns seized at scenes of drug violence in Mexico can be traced to U.S. commercial sources. [emphasis added]

“If people don’t buy the lie, make it bigger.”

  2. “The guns they recover that have obvious sources from the Mexican or foreign militarys don’t get traced through ATF’s systems. ”

But guns that our government sold to the Mexican military and police DO get traced back to the US. That much is true. Lies are usually laced with just enough truth to work.

    How do you like that?

    1) US government sells scores of thousands of arms to Mexico’s police and military.
    2) Corruption in Mexican police and military move these arms to cartels.
    3) In a ruse to fight the “drug war”, Mexican government then seizes some of these arms.
    4) They submit 1/4 of those arms for ATF tracing.
    5) Some percentage return as having originated in the US.

Gun controllers in the United states claim that 95% of cartel arms seized in US come from the US civilian market. They call for a ban on semiauto firearms to US civilians.

In effect, the US government arms Mexico, Mexican corruption arms the cartels … and US citizens like you and me pay for this via loss of a fundamental right.

How many here say HELL NO to this situation?

  3. Too bad that these distortions of truth wer swallowed whole by Yon. At least he acknowledged the Fox report on his blog.
