Ten Thousand Rule

From Richard Fernandez, comes my quote of the day:

The only thing worse than having your own business is having a moderately successful blog.

If moderate success if defined as 10,000 readers a day, I fail by that standard. My daily readership averages about 2.5k. But I completely understand everything Richard talks about in his post. That’s why I’ve decided it’s time to monetize this thing. I need an incentive to spend several hours of my day keeping up with everything. I’m working with a friend who has a web business to try to figure out how to make this work, but I’m pretty determined to do it. I might need some supplemental income soon anyway.

  1. Unless you are getting 100K hits a day, a blog is not a replacement for a real job. (I wish it was otherwise.) But use Google’s adwords thingy, and you can at least get enough revenue coming in to cover your hosting expenses, and put a few dollars a day in your pocket. Even my miserable little blog that only gets about 400 hits a day does that.

  2. Yeah, be careful. Starting a business and taking in new income though self employment, even if it’s small income will screw you with PA unemployment compensation.

  3. Keep the flash to a minimum, and I’ll be quite happy to visit your site and see your ads.

There ain’t so such thing as a free lunch.

*You’re* blog is small and miserable?!? It’s one of my favorite blogs! It’s one of the blogs I look up to, as I write for my own!

Of course, if *your* blog is miserable, then my blog is just a little insect hiding under a rock… :-)

And mine is hiding under your insect…

I used to get about 1000 hits a day. Admittedly, I have been too busy teaching to blog as much as I would like. That is about to change, now that the semester is over. (Assuming, of course, that Blogger ever comes back to life–it has been inoperative for a day or two now.)

  7. Porn. That is the #1 money maker. Show more porn. Gun porn doesn’t count.

  8. There’s a sign in my corner deli that says something to the effect that ” the only thing more overrated than natural childbirth is owning your own business.”

  9. I haven’t ‘monetized’ DOOT so-to-speak unless you consider the UM patches. I make enough after expenses to buy some ammo, satiate my camo obsession and buy new patches.
