Shooting People a Joking Matter?

Tam takes a look at the Armed Mommy Facebook page, and the controversy it generated in an article at The Wire. Tam notes:

In the end, I’m torn. I’m always glad to see more people taking their Second Amendment rights seriously and getting hip to the idea of taking responsibility for their own safety, but at the same time, I’m vaguely squicked, and I can’t put my finger on exactly why…

RTWT. The first is, I think the issue is that there’s a certain un-seriousness about it, and guns are serious business. Most people who have thought about this stuff tend not to joke about shooting people. The second, I would say, is there’s a certain “way to be the stereotype!” about it. But than again, maybe we ought to be happy that there are women out there falling into the left’s stereotypes about gun owners!

  1. I think there’s a lot of value in a woman telling the anti-gunners “GFY.” That’s basically what she’s doing, and there is no denying that this is something that the anti-gunners need to be told.

    1. Gosh, Sean, I don’t think women should be posing in photos holding guns, especially not scantily clad!

I’ll pause a moment to let you think about that.

      Sunk in yet?

      Okay.

I do think that people of any sex, dressed in any fashion, posing with a gun saying they can hardly wait to try it out on a person is… problematic? Is that the modern term? Yes, problematic.

      1. Of course, on the immediate issue of someone standing over a perp with a smoking gun as the police drive up, having had published such a picture would be a Bad.Idea.

On the other hand, I see what Sebastien is saying. Oleg does a fair amount of photos that have the same theme, albeit much more decorously phrased.

      2. Yup. Problematic is how I would also (politely) phrase it.

I got issues with people talking about how much they want to shoot/kill someone. Don’t care whether it’s because they are truly evil craven murderous sociopaths, internet mall ninjas, or “mommies” who talk tough about shooting people for self-defense.

Tam said she couldn’t put her finger on the thing bugging her about the Armed Mommie site. For me, it’s the idea that nobody should be celebrating the idea of shooting another person. It’s one thing to be able to do so if forced; quite another to brag about doing it if the opportunity would just present itself. Gleeful contemplation of shooting a person is not something to be proud of.

And I apply the same criteria to all persons, not just women.

          1. Let’s try this one.

          2. I’ve been trying to find one of those, but I want one that doesn’t have a thumbs down too, since I tend to agree for FBs reasoning regarding that.

  2. It’s possible you’re looking at a money-making character, not a real person. It’s done all the time on youtube. Probably facebook too.

    1. Yeah. The page seemed to start solid but degenerated over time. The attention to graphics and the increase in dramatic license over time suggest someone is really craving attention. Unusual for Facebook, huh?

  3. I think it depends who this lady/group is targeting. If it’s the likes of MDA/MAIG, fine. If it’s “anti-gunners” it may not be the best way of going about it.

  4. I wonder if Armed Mommy lets Armed Plumber or Armed Repairman onto her property? Wouldn’t she need to disarm them first? Why would she let anyone with questionable gun retention skills on her property around her precious family? Isn’t her gun enough to protect everyone, including the repairman?

Haven’t read enough of her Facebook page to find out….

    1. I wonder if Armed Mommy lets Armed Plumber or Armed Repairman onto her property?

      Er, why wouldn’t she?

  5. To gunho is the problem. Be ready but don’t boast about your intentions. Screws with I was in fear of my life defense is the worst does happen.

  6. Propaganda is important.

I saw Oleg Volk’s posters on self defense on blogs like Mitch Berg’s “Shot in the Dark” and Joel Rosenberg’s blog and their MN CCW law posts. They changed my attitude from guns are unnecessary and people are better off without them — all the way to I should get my license. And to only support politicians that trust people with guns.

Posters and slogans are important in the fight for ideas and Facebook, Blogs, Twitter and social media are the modern walls where they get posted. Posters are a way to start the change in people’s attitudes. The communists and fascists realized this, and used posters and art to influence people.

  7. Look at it from her point of view. she’s obviously conservative and conservative women have been under attack by the left and the anti’s lately. She’s been told to accept rape without fighting back. Since she is a war vet, I can see how that would piss her off. She and other conservative women are labeled as dumb and incapable much like the left has labeled Sarah Palin. All this has been going on for awhile and it’s been just a matter of time before strong prideful conservative women fought back against the left wing hypocrites. If she had typed “vagina” every other word, the left might have never noticed her.

  8. Although nobody in his/her right mind wants to have to shoot someone, mainly because of the legal aftermath, I still subscribe to the Dirty Harry theory of the use of lethal force:

“Nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right people get shot.”

  9. Maybe it is a parody site. Like the Landover Baptist Church but with Facebook.
