Stripping Second Amendment Rights by Fiat

Obama

It would be a pity for this story to get buried under the Obama smart gun smoke and mirrors, but you might remember from last July, the Obama Administration proposed a broad ban on certain Social Security recipients from exercising their Second Amendment rights. Kate Pavlich is reporting the Administration is now planning to move ahead with that regulation. Anyone taking Social Security through a designated payee could be placed in the NICS system as someone who is mentally ill, and thus prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms.

    Not mentally ill. “Mentally defective”.

Mental illness can be treated. Mental defects are assumed to be permanent (not to mention, “mentally defective” is a scarier term to a layman). Naturally, the Administration wants to assign the more damaging label, whether it’s accurate or not.

It’s not that different than DiFi conflating (intentionally, I believe) the “No-Fly List” and the “terrorism watch list” when talking about restricting gun sales. The rhetoric relies on lay-people reacting to scare terms and not understanding the differences.

  2. I think this proposal is designed to absorb NRA/SAF resources in the inevitable legal challenge.

  3. How long before the Democrats go after these peoples voting rights? If they are “mental defective” enough to not be able to handle their finances, and their 2nd amendment rights get stripped, how long before they lose their right to vote? The elderly tend to be more conservative than society at large, and getting rid of their right to vote would help the Democrats win elections.
