Obama Puts His Gun Control Cards on the Table

Obama has announced he will support the Inter-American Arms Treaty:

The treaty requires countries to take a number of steps to reduce the illegal manufacture and trade in guns, ammunition and explosives.

In addition to making illegal the unauthorized manufacture and exporting of firearms, the treaty calls for countries to adopt strict licensing requirements, mark firearms when they are made and imported to make them easier to trace, and establish a cooperative process for sharing information between national law-enforcement agencies investigating arms smuggling.

Licensing requirements?  Unauthorized manufacture?  The answer to this, from the Senate, better not be no.  It needs to be “HELL NO!”  If Harry Reid even peeps that he’ll back this, I can guarantee he will be target numero uno in 2010.  He’s already facing a tough race.

  1. I’m against gun control as much as anyone, but the description in the post may well be law in the United States already. I read the Washington Post’s article and didn’t get any more enlightenment.

Here are the major points and why I think they are US law:
    1) “…unauthorized manufacture and exporting of firearms, the treaty calls for countries to adopt strict licensing requirements….” If licensing doesn’t refer to individual owner licensing, then we have this thanks to the 1968 Gun Control Act. Try making a firearm to sell without a manufacturer’s licence. Exporting is also licensed and regulated.

    2) “…mark firearms when they are made and imported to make them easier to trace….” The Gun Control Act mandates serial numbers on all guns. Also, imported guns must be marked with importer’s name and weapon information. As a collector, I hate those $(#&$! markings.

    3) “…establish a cooperative process for sharing information between national law-enforcement agencies investigating arms smuggling.” Already part of ATF’s duties. They can use trace information in criminal investigations all they want, but cannot share it if there is no criminal investigation (Tiahart amendment).

I think that this treaty is for countries that do not have those things. I still don’t support the US signing on to it because these things can get a life of their own. I’d rather have gun control defeated everywhere possible.

I might agree to it if the treaty removed some of all gun control laws–yeah, dream on.

  2. “Jorge Chabat, a professor of international studies at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics in Mexico City, said Obama’s advocacy for the treaty marks “an important step toward ending the permissiveness in the United States” toward arms trafficking on its border. ”

The alleged permissiveness toward arms trafficking on the US border doesn’t even exist is nothing more than a parroting of deliberate media lies. It’s nice to know that our government is adept in Joseph Goebbels’ “Big Lie” technique.

  3. Harry Reid is target numero uno in 2010 either way. Nevada voters thought they were voting for a moderate Democrat – not this asshole.

  4. See what Gun Controller California and a lying California attorney, Gun Controller Steven T. Schoonover, and flip flopper James K. Olson did here to a Nevada citizen’s right to have a gun to protect herself after James K. Olson had broken into this Nevada citizen’s home! Gun Controllers Among Us, Marin County California Courts

Most liberal Gun Controller Marin County California has repeatedly thumbed their nose at the US Constitution, then imposed their illegal Gun Controller actions onto a Nevada citizen. What’s next?

Lying California attorney, Steven T. Schoonover had the Nevada citizen served at 7:30 Thursday evening in Nevada for a 9 am the following Monday court in California and the California incompetent Gun Controller judge allowed that 1 day notice although illegal as have to be served more than 10 days before a hearing and furthermore it was to a Nevada citizen!

Three strikes you’re out lying California attorney, Gun Controller Steven T. Schoonover
