Peak Social Issues?

Say Uncle asks whether we’ve reached peak social issues. My prediction is that no, we have not. But I think every new generation is always looking for things they can do that will piss off their parents, and the Millennials had to reach to completely absurd levels to accomplish that. So things really have no where to go but backwards.

I believe over the next 50 years, this country is going to see a good old fashioned religious revival, not unlike the ones we had two centuries ago. Only it won’t be strictly protestant, and probably will have a lot of tendencies none of us today will like. I don’t dare say socialism, because I’m not convinced Generation Z has any better idea what Socialism actually is than Millennials do. There’s already evidence the ground work is being laid.

We even have our very own Jacksonian in the White House.

That’s the first thing I’ve read in a long time that made me glad to be an old guy headed for the door. ;-)

Cherokees — They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. Let’s send them to Oklahoma, and have Oklahoma pay for it…

  3. I will say it seems like a bunch of young evangelicals are becoming Social Justice Warriors about a lot of issues (illegal immigration, Islam and some others). Look at Wheaton University for a good example.

But is this sort of ideological division within a faith really anything new? It reminds me of the open war (in other countries) between the “liberation theology” within the Catholic Church, and the “death squads” that targeted that clergy. E.g., typically the U.S.-backed “death squads” in Central and South America in the 1980s had a strong evangelical component in their top leadership, which was a benefit for targeting Catholic priests.

Going farther back in history, that situation was the reverse in the Spanish Civil War, when the Catholic Church openly supported Franco’s fascist rebels.

  4. Speaking of Millennials pissing off their parents, I started wondering that about that in college 20 years ago, listening to Ministry. How do you piss off a parent who likes a song where Al Jourgenson shouts f**k for 3 minutes? Go to a crazy hard-corp church, I guess.
