BTW This anecdote about Peter Muhlenberg is badass (from the wikipedia page):

According to a biography written by his great nephew in the mid 1800′s,.[1] on January 21, 1776 in the Anglican church in Woodstock, Virginia, Reverend Muhlenberg took his sermon text from the third chapter Ecclesiastes, which starts with “To every thing there is a season…”. As the story goes, he read the eighth verse, “…a time of war, and a time of peace,… and this is the time of war”. According to the story, he then removed his clerical robe to reveal his Colonel’s uniform, and the next day led out 300 men from the county to form the nucleus of the Eighth Virginia.

Thicker hair helps. :) However, since my hair was still wet in that photo, I could have used a hat. Last night I showed him several options I would have been happy to wear with him to help keep warm. We joked about how the park is surprisingly unpopular in the winter - the time Washington was actually there. Inside the barracks wasn't too bad, but I'm shocked they didn't try to put more than 12 men in there. They could have fit and it would have made it a little warmer.

I searched google news, but I can’t find any reports of the National Parks being painted red in blood yesterday as predicted. I especially checked PA, knowing you were there. Perhaps your firearm is defective since it didn’t jump out of it’s holster and start shooting the place up?

A couple things …

First, great photos! I am a little jealous of your visit to a place steeped in such great history.

Second, the ushanka is a wonderful and effective hat! I picked up a couple when I visited the Soviet Union years back. But Bitter’s not wearing a hat … does that mean her blood runs warm, or merely that she’s tougher than you!?

Thirdly, many people have made dire predictions about allowing people to lawfully carry guns on national parks land. I am very glad to hear that you didn’t threaten or endanger the public or parks rangers, or start blasting away at those deer based on the “varmint mentality” that we gun owners ubiquitously are supposed to possess.

I don’t know … but this makes me wonder if all those fears of the Parks Association, Ranger’s retirees, and Brady Campaign are unfounded …
