It’s a type of faggotry that didn’t really exist before the internets. It is basically an animal mascot fetish. Maybe people that were fondled at disney world and liked it. Who knows.

when i posted a message on the PAFOA about visiting pittsburgh and asking about potential places to move in the area, i received about 15 responses… the last 4 or 5 were a discussion of furries in the burgh… i was a tad scared

I think that the OP is looking for attention, ANY attention, including negative attention. I applaud you for pointing out that as OC’ers we have to maintain a positive public image in order to further the cause of the movement. Absolutely correct and worth pointing out often ;) … But at the same time I think that by re-posting the ridiculousness of *that* thread here only satisfies the sick craving of the OP…
I would prefer to see the existence of the thread die a quiet un-noticed death. Just my $02

Nah, a lot of them are just into animation, or having an animal-like alternate persona, or more frighteningly, rather creepy erotica. Individuals claiming themselves to be an animal are relatively rare even compared to the fans of Brian Jacques or ‘plush animals’. A lot of even those folks are pretty normal to first appearances.

The guy in a kangaroo suit part would just be weird. It can certainly be creepy, but it’s not likely to get him shot or arrested. Mall ninja part, you betcha.
