Dear Monica:

Given more than 20,000 federal, state, and local restrictions on firearms, it's almost comical when people like you cry "foul" over the resistance of "just one more" restriction.

While reporting a lost or stolen firearm is reasonable (and reasonable people do just that), this bill is complicated and would almost certainly have many unintended consequences. As is almost always the case with firearms restrictions, those consequences fall on the shoulders of those that generally follow the laws of the land.

But yet now you're mad and take it upon yourself to demonize O'Brien - as if his NO vote means that he supports illegal guns and crime. I see no point or intellectual merit in your take, other than to showcase the intolerance which some people (like yourself) have for constitutional guarantees that you simply don't like.

This is not simply a bill that would, as you claim, "curb illegal gun trafficking." This issue - the solution to this problem - is about holding accountable those that behave in damaging, irresponsible, and criminal ways. Not just holding them accountable by arresting them and tossing them into the ineffective justice system pipeline. It's about making them pay so terribly severely that they will never, ever, commit a violent act again. Throwing more laws at guns and gun owners will never, ever, touch this problem of violence that we are all so fed up about. It's just a political bandwagon to be on...and frankly, many so-called liberals jump on this wagon to their own demise. Barack Obama, one of my Senators and a man I respect in many ways, is beginning to talk about his support for gun control. For his sake I really wish he would not - because that position is going to kill him politically. Watch and see...he will soon learn that Chicago is not the United States.

It's time you began demonizing those directly responsible for violence and criminal behavior. Until then, you're just waving your arms, speaking empty words, and exposing yourself as misguided at best, and a fraud at worst.

<i>"...and polls showing 100 percent of Harper’s constituents support the idea..."</i>

Even Saddam Hussein didn't claim that 100% of Iraqi's backed him...

Either there is something wrong with their polling method, or this is another case of "sometimesit'seasiertomakeshitupitis."

Like I said, you're 100% right on this one. I'm just wondering if there have been abuses of it elsewhere. If there have been then that'd be something folks that lives in states like MI can use to get their current laws repealed.

If the law isn't going to do anything, then why pass it?

I think you're 100% absolutely right on this one Sebastian, but I gotta ask: Have there been problems with similar laws elsewhere?

I know in my state of Michigan there's a legal requirement to report a stolen firearm in, I think, 7 days. Maybe it's 10. I've never heard of anyone being busted for this. Not even criminals.
